A butcher shop in Washington, D.C., was the scene of an all-night, armed confrontation in which a group of black men began throwing bricks at a white shop owner.
Police said the confrontation occurred outside of the Butcher Shop at 2:45 a.m.
Saturday in a neighborhood of northwest Washington.
The confrontation followed a weekend of unrest in the Washington, DC area, where black and white teenagers clashed with police.
The group had set up barricades at the entrance to the Butcher shop, a white establishment in the 1800 block of New York Avenue NW.
They threw bricks at the owner, Joseph Stiles, and his son, Daniel Stiles.
The owner, David Smith, was able to flee, but the attackers returned with two young black men.
Police say they used a baseball bat and a wooden spoon to subdue Smith.
Smith was later found on the ground with a bloodied face and other injuries.
The men were identified as James Jones, 20, and Christopher Hargis, 18.
Police identified both men as members of the gang “The N-Word” (a reference to the Confederate flag), the Washington Post reported.
Jones was arrested for assaulting a police officer and Hargi for assault.
The two black suspects are believed to be brothers, police said.
The butcher shop has been a hot spot for racial tension in Washington for years.
In February, a group called the “Black Guerrilla” broke into the shop, vandalized the interior and set fire to the business.
On March 7, a man who allegedly stole a bag of marijuana from the butcher shop was arrested.
The next day, a crowd gathered outside the shop to demonstrate against police brutality.
“We want justice for this young man, and we want to make sure he gets what he deserves,” the group chanted.
On Thursday, a black woman was attacked and robbed in the butcher store.
Police responded to a report of a possible robbery and found a woman with a gunshot wound in the face, the Washington Metropolitan Police Department reported.
Police are investigating the robbery as an armed robbery.
On Saturday, an armed black man entered the Butcher, and the owner was able get away.
“This is a place where people can come together and be themselves,” said store owner Joseph Stile, who has been the victim of several racist attacks.
“The police are a joke.
They don’t do anything.
They are just sitting on their hands.”
The Washington Post’s Mike Rogoway and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
