The world’s largest aquarium, with a capacity of over a million square metres, is set to open its doors in the southern port city of Karachi next month.
The project is a partnership between the Pakistan Tourism Authority and Chinese-owned Shanghai Ocean Corporation.
The aquarium is scheduled to open in late 2019.
The pavilion has been designed by Chinese-born architect Huang Xiangmo.
It was built in collaboration with the Pakistan International Exhibition Centre, which will house it.
The Pakistan International Hotel will also be housed within the aquarium.
“The aquarium project is part of our ongoing engagement with China,” said Tourism Minister Asaduddin Owaisi.
“It is a very big project and we have to be very careful about the impact it has on the local economy,” he added.
The pavilion will include a cinema, cafe and exhibition space for local artists and visitors.
The Pakistani capital has seen a rise in international tourism in recent years, with the number of foreign visitors climbing to more than 2.5 million.
Last year, the capital saw its fourth-largest ever influx of foreign tourists, with 1.4 million foreign tourists visiting in the year ending June.
Pakistan has also been seeing a resurgence in its local arts scene, with more than 30 artists opening new locations across the country.
